In celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the United Nations, a monumental art installation entitled Enlightened Universe will be unveiled on Saturday, 24 October, at 4:30 p.m. at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. The installation — created by Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón — is presented by The Gabarron Foundation in partnership with the United Nations.
On Monday, 19 October, the Remember Slavery Programme, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, will host the world premiere screening of Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Economic and Social Council Chamber at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
On Monday, 5 October, the Remember Slavery Programme and Fordham University will host a round-table discussion on “Truth: Women, Creativity and Memory of Slavery” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The world will mark the International Day of Peace on Monday, 21 September. In his annual message, the Secretary-General calls upon all warring parties to lay down their weapons and observe a global ceasefire. “Stop the killings and the destruction and create space for lasting peace,” he said.
The United Nations Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme (RAF) will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York beginning on Thursday, 10 September.
The United Nations General Assembly will mark Nelson Mandela International Day (18 July) with an informal meeting at Headquarters, including the award of the first-ever UN Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize, on 24 July, recognizing the South African leader’s contributions to democracy, justice and reconciliation and his dedication to the service of humanity.
From a pool of over 1,200 entrants, 70 students from 42 countries representing 60 universities have been selected as winners of the Many Languages, One World international essay contest organized by ELS Educational Services, Inc. and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).
The United Nations Department of Public Information and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will organize a round table discussion on “The General History of Africa: Learning and Teaching about African Heritage” from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, 10 July, in Conference Room 3 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event is open to educators, students, the diplomatic community and others who have pre-registered. The event will also be streamed live via UN Webcast.
The official opening of “The Transformative Power of Art,” an exhibition organized by Sam Kahamba Kutesa, President of the sixty-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly, will take place in the Visitors’ Lobby on Tuesday, 30 June, at 6 p.m.
