Haiti

ECOSOC/7106

The Economic and Social Council today appointed an additional member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti, adopting three decisions including those on geospatial information and enlargement of the Executive Committee of the Programme of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In Chad, the United Nations and partners have assisted some 250,000 people affected by flooding; however, only one quarter of the $70 million needed to help 8000,000 people has been received. The water rise has stabilized in the capital but is forecasted to move upstream to the already crisis-impacted Lac region.

In Haiti, suspected cholera cases have doubled over the past few days to nearly 2,000. In Cité Soleil, the outbreak’s epicentre, the United Nations Children’s Fund has begun delivering potable water to 1,000 people and the World Food Programme brought food to 6,000 of the most vulnerable people over the weekend.

With the spread of cholera exacerbating the ongoing security, humanitarian, economic, and political crisis faced by Haiti, the Security Council must act — “and decisively so” — in response to its Government’s request for support to its institutions to restore order, and to save thousands of lives that will otherwise be lost, the United Nations top official for that country told the Security Council today, as Council members weighed in on two draft resolutions under consideration.
