Internet and Intranet services
The primary objectives of this subprogramme is to increase the interest and access by governments, the UN system, and the public-at-large to UN materials and information, as well, as preservation of the Organization’s intellectual property rights.
The expected accomplishments by the end of the plan period would include an increase in coverage of the Organization activities and public awareness about the UN issues.
Indicators of achievement would include number of access to the UN Intranet and Internet sites; an increase in number of inquires and request for UN materials and information; as well, as positive feedback from the users.
Internet
The primary objectives of the UN web site operation and development are: global and easy access by governments, the UN system, and the public-at-large to UN materials and information, as well, as preservation of the Organization’s intellectual property rights.
To ensure successful development of the UN web site the following activities are envisioned:
Research and introduction of new technologies to
enable
implementation of dynamic UN web site with personalized,
up-to-the-minute interactive web pages, which have fresh information from the
Headquarters and offices in Geneva, Vienna and other locations;
Research and introduction of a new multimedia technology on the UN web site, that will allow the direct delivery worldwide of breaking news and media products, including live transmissions and complete multimedia coverage of United Nations activities;
Introduction of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
and other protocols to enable access of the hand-held mobile devices anywhere
in the world to the latest information on United Nations;
In-house development of Ad-hoc Internet applications in order to improve functionality of the UN web site.
