The global launch of the 2013 International Year of Quinoa will take place on 29 October with a special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations Academic Impact of the Department of Public Information will then host a symposium on quinoa.

In celebration of the sixty-seventh anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organization, the 2012 United Nations Day Concert “A Message of Peace featuring United Nations Messenger of Peace Stevie Wonder”, will take place on Wednesday, 24 October, at 7 p.m. at the United Nations in New York.

The United Nations Department of Public Information will partner with Rutgers University Center for the Study of Genocide, Conflict Resolution, and Human Rights and the Documentation Center of Cambodia to examine the issues that led to mass murder during the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia and to highlight the current efforts towards reconciliation in the country.

A photo exhibition entitled “Too Young to Wed”, commemorating the first observance of the International Day of the Girl Child (11 October), opens in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby on Thursday, 11 October, at 6 p.m.

A photo exhibition entitled “World Hunger — A Solvable Problem”, celebrating the global partnership between the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Saudi Arabia in the fight against hunger, will open with a special ceremony and reception on Thursday, 27 September, at 6:45 p.m. in the North-East Gallery of the Visitors Lobby at United Nations Headquarters.

The three winners of a speechwriting contest organized jointly by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) of the Department of Public Information and the Brookings Institution will be at Headquarters on 21 September to meet with the Secretary-General.

On Friday, 21 September, the United Nations Department of Public Information will organize the fifteenth student observance of the International Day of Peace under the theme “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future”, which focuses on the use of natural resources to finance armed conflict, or how struggles over control of those resources can fuel conflict.

The United Nations will mark the centenary of the birth of Raoul Wallenberg with a special event to examine his mysterious disappearance after the Second World War and the legacy he left to humankind.

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) will host a lunchtime debate on the future of newspapers, on 10 September at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.

For the thirty-second consecutive year, the United Nations Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme starts today at United Nations Headquarters.
