EXHIBIT ON CHILD MARRIAGE OPENS AT UNITED NATIONS 11 OCTOBER
A photo exhibition entitled “Too Young to Wed”, commemorating the first observance of the International Day of the Girl Child (11 October), opens in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby on Thursday, 11 October, at 6 p.m.
The exhibit features photography and video by Stephanie Sinclair and Jessica Dimmock and portrays a harmful practice that devastates the lives of millions of girls who are married off each year. By highlighting the personal narratives of girls from around the world, the show aims to renew global attention to this critical issue and promote accountability from decision makers worldwide.
Statements at the opening will be made by Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Founder of Girls Not Brides, Stephanie Sinclair, Jessica Dimmock, and Ghaicha Salamatou Agali, a young woman from Niger, who will share her personal story of avoiding child marriage.
Dr. Osotimehin, Archbishop Tutu and Ms. Agali will also hold a press conference at 11 a.m. in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium to present the UNFPA report “Marrying too Young: End Child Marriage”.
This exhibit is hosted by UNFPA and VII Photo Agency.
