General Assembly: Press Release

On 4 June 2019, the United Nations General Assembly elected Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Permanent Representative of Nigeria, President of its seventy-fourth session.

The Special Committee on Decolonization will hold the 2019 Caribbean Regional Seminar in Saint George’s, Grenada, from 2 to 4 May with a view to accelerating action in implementation of the third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (2011-2020).

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will convene the United Nations Forum on the Question of Palestine, “The threat of de facto annexation — What next for Palestine?”, on 4 April from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Trusteeship Chamber at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Amid the backdrop of rising unilateralism and large-scale migration, world leaders attending the General Assembly united under the theme of making the United Nations relevant to all people, stressing that only through a multilateral rules-based order can the international community meet emerging challenges.

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will hold a special meeting on 28 November to observe the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in the Trusteeship Chamber from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) elected Dee‑Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr. (Liberia) as its Chair on 4 October.

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) elected Gillian Elizabeth Bird (Australia) as Chair on 5 June.

The Third Committee (Social Humanitarian and Cultural) elected Mahmoud Saikal (Afghanistan) as Chair on 5 June.

The Sixth Committee (Legal) elected Michel Xavier Biang (Gabon) Chair on 5 June.

The Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) elected Lewis Garseedah Brown II as Chair on 5 June.
