General Assembly: Press Release

The President of the General Assembly, Miroslav Lajčák (Slovakia), will convene a high-level meeting on peacebuilding and sustaining peace on 24 and 25 April 2018 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

NEW YORK, 9 March (Department of Political Affairs) — The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, formally known as the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (also known as the C-24), will undertake an official visiting mission to New Caledonia and Paris from 12 to 19 March.

Convening for its seventy-second session amid a multilateral system overwhelmed by crises, the General Assembly heard world leaders defend diplomacy and dialogue while expressing a strong will to galvanize support to confront climate threats, resolve languishing conflicts and build a sturdy path towards sustainable development for all.

Following is the statement by the General Assembly’s Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People regarding the recognition by the United States of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel:

The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) approved 11 draft resolutions today, ranging from the protection of human rights when countering terrorism, to safeguarding access to drinking water and sanitation, and creating youth-effective policies.

On 28 September, the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) elected Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aluloom, Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, as Chair by acclamation.

The Sixth Committee (Legal) elected Burhan Gafoor (Singapore) as Chair on 31 May 2017.

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) elected Tommo Monthe (Cameroon) as Chair on 31 May 2017.

The Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) elected Rafael Darío Ramírez Carreño (Venezuela) on 31 May 2017.

The Third Committee (Social Humanitarian and Cultural) elected Einar Gunnarsson (Iceland) as Chair on 31 May 2017.
