The following statement was issued today by the Under-Secretary General for Peace-keeping Operations, Kofi Annan, following the formal recommendation by the Security Council that he be appointed United Nations Secretary-General:
A sculpture, entitled "Sphere within a Sphere" by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, will be presented as a gift to the United Nations by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Lamberto Dini, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, 21 November, on the terrace north of the Visitors Entrance to the General Assembly.
