Television Spot on Child Prostitution, Print Campaign On Domestic Violence, Radio Advertisement on AIDS Prevention Receive Awards

Advertising agencies from the Philippines, United States and Brazil will be honoured for public service advertising on Friday, 31 January, when the United Nations Awards are presented by Samir Sanbar, Assistant Secretary- General for Public Information, at the 1996 Television Advertising Awards Show at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

The United Nations Awards are presented annually and are jointly sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and The New York Festivals. They were established in 1990 to honour public service advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.

This year's panel of judges, made up of representatives of the United Nations, media organizations and design agencies, reviewed work dealing with such United Nations-related issues as the status of women, social development, ageing and the disabled, health, human rights, crime and violence, literacy, sustainable development and the fight against poverty. The judges selected three public service advertisements -- one each in print, radio and television -- to receive awards.

Dentsu, Young & Rubicam-Alcantara, Philippines, will be presented with the Gold United Nations Award for "Make-Up", a television spot on the issue of child prostitution. The Silver United Nations Award will be received by William Eisner Associates, United States, for "Broken Nose, Married Her, Scarred for Life", a print campaign produced for the Milwaukee Women's Center on the issue of domestic violence. The Bronze United Nations Award will go to Master Comunicacao e Marketing Ltda, Brazil, for "Braulio", a radio advertisement that uses music and humour to promote safe sex for the prevention of AIDS.
