NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS EXHIBIT ON '50 YEARS: THE UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN'
19970307 TO BE OPENED AT HEADQUARTERSAn exhibit marking the fiftieth anniversary of the first session of the Commission on the Status of Women will open on Monday, 10 March, at 1:15 p.m. in the Visitors Lobby. The exhibit will be opened by the Assistant Secretary-General for Public Information, Samir Sanbar, and by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women, Angela King.
The Commission's historic first session was held at Lake Success, New York, in 1947. Its forty-first session will take place at Headquarters, from 10 to 21 March. The 45-member Commission actively monitors the situation of women worldwide and promotes equality between men and women. It makes recommendations on issues affecting women, suggests policy goals for Member States and receives complaints on violations of women's rights.
The exhibit "50 Years: The UN Commission on the Status of Women" was organized by the Department of Public Information (DPI) in cooperation with the Division for the Advancement of Women of the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development with financial support from the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). It will remain on view until 31 March.
