NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS PALESTINIAN EXHIBIT TO BE HELD AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS

19961126 A cultural exhibit presented by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations will be opened at 6 p.m. on Friday, 29 November, in the public lobby of the General Assembly building. Entitled "Preserving the Legacy, A New Dawn of Hope", the exhibit will be on view until 6 p.m., Thursday, 5 December, and is associated with the annual commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The exhibit will feature traditional Palestinian handicrafts collected from various Palestinian towns and villages. This extensive collection includes traditional Palestinian embroidery, jewellery, room furnishings, musical instruments, pottery and ceramic artwork, woven rugs, decorative soaps and candles, dolls dressed in traditional costumes, Quran boxes and Holy Bible covers made from olive wood, a horse saddle, and a mother-of-pearl Dome of the Rock. The exhibit will be opened by Ibra Deguène Ka (Senegal), Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. A statement will also be made by a representative of Palestine. The President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, all permanent representatives to the United Nations and high-level Secretariat officials have been invited to the opening ceremony, which is expected to last about 45 minutes. After the statements, the Chairman of the Committee and the representative of Palestine will escort invited guests through the exhibit. The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is commemorated in accordance with the provisions of General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977. Nabil Anani and Nawaf Hamed, artists representing the Ministry of Culture of the Palestinian Authority, will be taking part in the opening ceremony, and will be available during the week of the exhibition to provide information about it.
