The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C. in the morning of Wednesday, 11 June, where he met with United States Secretary of State Colin Powell for a private working lunch, at which they discussed the Middle East and Iraq, operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Myanmar.

The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of José Antonio Ocampo of Colombia as the new Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, succeeding Nitin Desai, effective 1 September 2003.
