The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the impact of the renewed hostilities on civilian populations in Aceh, Indonesia.  In particular, he is disturbed by reports of extrajudicial killings and widespread burning of schools.

SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS NOBUYASU ABE AS NEW UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL

FOR DISARMAMENT AFFAIRS


The Secretary-General announced today the appointment of Nobuyasu Abe of Japan as the new Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, succeeding Jayantha Dhanapala, effective 1 July 2003.  Mr. Abe has been serving as Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since November 2001.
