The International Organization for Migration (IOM) today said that nearly 100 people have died or disappeared in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean since the beginning of 2024. The toll is over twice as high as the figure for the same period of 2023.

The following General Statement issued today is attributable to the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the Order of the International Court of Justice in the case of South Africa against Israel on the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip:

Concluding the open debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which saw ministers and other national representatives meet into the evening of 23 January, speakers today urged the Security Council to act in the face of continuing violations of international law and its own resolutions in the Gaza Strip and beyond.

A lasting end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only come through a two-State solution, the United Nations chief told the Security Council today, following the reported rejection of such a formula by Israel’s leaders amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that since 2023, 13 Eastern and Southern African countries, particularly Zimbabwe and Zambia, have battled one of the worst cholera outbreaks in years. As of 15 January 2024, more than 200,000 cases, including some 3,000 fatalities, have been reported.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General informed that the first phase of the disengagement of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from South Kivu has begun, with a plan to complete its withdrawal from the area by June 2024.
