On 23 September 2014, the Security Council’s Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee approved the addition of 16 names to its list of individuals and entities subject to the targeted financial sanctions, travel ban and the arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2161 (2014), adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

During its informal consultations on 17 September 2014, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of Congo was briefed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Ms. Leila Zerrougui.

On 23 September 2014, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 751 (1992) and 1907 (2009) concerning Somalia and Eritrea approved the addition of the individual specified below to the list of individuals and entities subject to the travel ban, assets freeze and targeted arms embargo imposed by paragraphs 1, 3 and 7 of resolution 1844 (2008) and paragraph 43 of resolution 2093 (2013) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations:

The Security Council this afternoon welcomed the formation of a new Iraqi Government and supported the “collaboration of all States” to help it fight the armed group calling itself the “Islamic State”, or ISIL, at a meeting addressed by many State Ministers and chaired by United States Secretary of State John Kerry.

With the early results of an investigation into the downing of a Malaysian airline over Ukraine showing that the jet was hit by "high-energy objects”, the priority now was to prevent a repeat of that tragedy, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs told the Security Council this morning.

Protracted deadlock in Afghanistan over the result of presidential elections deepened a crisis that had already taken a heavy political, security and economic toll, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in that country told the Security Council today.

Determining that the “unprecedented extent” of the Ebola outbreak in Africa constituted a threat to international peace and security, the Security Council this afternoon called on Member States to respond urgently to the crisis and to refrain from isolating the affected countries.
