Violence this last month in Syria and the surrounding region has not only taken a toll on civilians but has also presented new threats to international peace and security, United Nations officials warned the Security Council today as they expressed deep concern about the ongoing tense situation across many fronts in that country.
The General Assembly today adopted an oral decision reaffirming its central role concerning the question of equitable representation and increased Security Council membership, as delegates underscored that the organ’s composition no longer reflects today’s political landscape.
On 9 August 2024, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 2745 (2024) held a briefing to Member States during which the armed groups expert, on behalf of the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts, briefed participants on the Panel’s final report dated 5 June 2024 (document S/2024/444).
On 23 August 2024, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al‑Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities removed the entry below from the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al‑Qaida Sanctions List after concluding its consideration of the de-listing request for this name submitted through the Office of the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009), and of the Comprehensive Report of the Ombudsperson on this de-listing request.
With polio beginning to spread through the Gaza Strip, and humanitarian and health agencies overextended, an immediate humanitarian pause and a long-term peace deal are imperative, the Security Council heard today during an open briefing on the Palestinian question.
Holding an open debate centred on preventing conflict and building and sustaining peace today, the Security Council heard that the principles contained in the UN Secretary-General’s “A New Agenda for Peace” must be translated into concrete action on the ground while speakers, to that end, spotlighted the central role of inclusive development and State-owned strategies in defusing cycles of violence around the world.
As the political, economic and security situation in Libya deteriorates, ordinary people live in fear of war erupting again, even as they prepare for local elections, the Organization’s senior official in the country reported to the Security Council today.
On 26 July 2024, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo held a briefing to Member States during which the Coordinator of the Group of experts briefed participants on the Group’s final report dated 4 June 2024 (S/2024/432).
The Security Council today extended its authorization of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) until the end of the year, expressing grave concern that Al-Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat to the peace, security and stability of Somalia and the region.
