Economic and Social Council Opens 2024 Management Segment

The Economic and Social Council today opened its 2024 management segment today taking up items including: economic and environmental questions; coordination, programme and other questions; the role of the United Nations system in the integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development into the implementation of and follow-up to the 2030 Agenda; implementation of and follow-up to major UN conferences; non-governmental organizations; summits; organizational and other matters; and elections, nominations, confirmations and appointments.

General Assembly Elects Philémon Yang of Cameroon President of Seventy-Ninth Session, Selects Main Committee Bureaus

In a series of elections today, delegates in the General Assembly chose its President for the seventy-ninth session, the Bureaus of the six Main Committees, as well the five non-permanent members of the Security Council for the next two-year term.

The United Nations team investigating atrocity crimes committed in Iraq by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) has laid the groundwork for future judicial proceedings, speakers told the Security Council today as they discussed ways to continue accountability efforts beyond the evidence-collecting body’s mandate expiry in September 2024.
