The Security Council today decided to renew measures designed to implement the arms embargo against Libya for another year, in particular those authorizing Member States — acting nationally or through regional organizations — to inspect vessels on the high seas off Libya’s coast believed to be in violation of the arms embargo imposed on that country.

On 16 May 2023, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014) held its third informal consultations of the year to receive a briefing by the Deputy Project Manager of the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism for Yemen (UNVIM) and the Senior Partnerships Adviser of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS, the implementing entity for UNVIM), on the mandate, structure and financial situation of the Mechanism.

The Security Council’s programme for June will feature an open debate on climate, peace and security, as well as two other signature events focused on increasing regional cooperation and tackling hate speech and extremism, respectively, its President for the month told a Headquarters press conference today.

Avoiding a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — the largest nuclear power station in Europe — is possible, the Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stressed to the Security Council today as he outlined, to that end, five concrete principles to ensure that plant’s nuclear safety and security.

On 26 May 2023, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Al-Shabaab approved the addition of the entry specified below to its Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the measures imposed by the Security Council and adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
