Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aluloom of Iraq Chair of First Committee

On 28 September, the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) elected Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aluloom, Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, as Chair by acclamation.  (See Press Release GA/DIS/3569.)

He took the place of Mouayed Saleh, Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, who had been elected Chair on 31 May 2017, but was unable to take up his functions.

Before his appointment as Permanent Representative, Mr. Aluloom headed the Department of the Americas in Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2016.  He served as Ambassador to Kuwait from 2010 to 2016.

After joining the Foreign Ministry in 2009 with the rank of Ambassador, Mr. Aluloom headed several departments and was a key participant in reviewing and restructuring Ministry policies.  He also served as an adviser to the Iraqi Transitional Council in 2004 and the Iraqi Governing Council in 2003.

With 35 years of experience in engineering, telecommunications and media, Mr. Aluloom holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics from the University of Technology in Baghdad, and a master’s degree in digital systems from Brunel University in London.

Born on 20 April 1958, Mr. Aluloom is married and has four children.
