General Assembly: No name

Rule of law and respect for human rights must stay at the heart of the fight against terrorism, the Sixth Committee (Legal) heard today as it opened its first meeting of the seventy-first General Assembly session.

Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Sixth Committee (Legal) on 13 June 2016 (see Press Release GA/11791).

Inga Rhonda King, Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, was elected Chair of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) on 29 September 2016 (see Press Release GA/AB/4202).

Vladimir Drobnjak, Permanent Representative of Croatia to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) on 13 June 2016 (see Press Release GA/11791).

María Emma Mejía Vélez, Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations, was elected to chair the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural) on 13 June 2016 (see Press Release GA/11791).

Dian Triansyah Djani, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) on 13 June 2016 (see Press Release GA/11791).

Sabri Boukadoum, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) on 13 June 2016 (see Press Release GA/11791).

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today explored ways to make the United Nations more accountable, transparent and effective through better oversight, with delegates stressing the need to prevent sexual exploitation and abuse and to protect civilians.

The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) met today for a brief organizational meeting to adopt its agenda and work programme for the seventy-first session of the General Assembly.

The Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) today approved its work programme for the seventy-first session, which covers topics ranging from the decolonization of the remaining Non-Self-Governing Territories, to peaceful uses of outer space, to the plight of Palestinian refugees and Israel’s practices in Occupied Arab Territories.
