The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that hundreds of thousands of people in Nigeria have been impacted by flash floods after a dam collapsed in Maiduguri in Borno State. The Office says that immediate humanitarian needs include food, include shelter and clean water.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that a vicious cycle of climate change, wildfires and air pollution is having a spiralling negative impact on human health, ecosystems and agriculture.

The Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict, in connection with the examination of the sixth report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict in the Central African Republic (S/2024/93), agreed to address the following messages through a public statement by the Chair of the Working Group.

In the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and most particularly in the West Bank, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is warning that people there are increasingly exposed to deadly warfare tactics that seem to exceed international standards for law enforcement.

On 9 August 2024, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 2745 (2024) held a briefing to Member States during which the armed groups expert, on behalf of the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts, briefed participants on the Panel’s final report dated 5 June 2024 (document S/2024/444).  

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today said that one in five children – or 466 million children – live in areas that experience at least double the number of extremely hot days every year compared to just six decades ago.

In Myanmar, the World Food Programme has launched an emergency relief response for over 100,000 people impacted by ongoing floods. WFP teams are on the ground delivering cash, rice, special nutritious foods and fortified biscuits to at least 120,000 people in Bago, Kachin, Kayin, Magway and Sagaing.

The Security Council today lifted the arms embargo on the Central African Republic, also deciding that, until 31 July 2025, all Member States shall take the necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer of arms and related materiel of all types to armed groups and associated individuals operating in that country.

In Chad, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that the country is grappling with an array of challenges that are driving humanitarian needs. These include the arrival of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.

Moving to South Sudan, where the Mission there will be supporting a mobile court in Bentiu, Unity State, scheduled to begin on 22 July. This national initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law and accountability.
