Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message at the opening of the Economic and Social Council Humanitarian Affairs Segment, in New York today:

The Economic and Social Council began its humanitarian affairs segment today, exploring solutions that alleviate human suffering caused by growing hunger and displacement, compounded by the triple crises of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and conflict.

Convening the “Meeting on the Transition from Relief to Development” today, the Economic and Social Council held two round-table discussions to examine ways to strengthen coordination between humanitarian, development and peacebuilding actors to address multidimensional challenges, including displacement, acute food insecurity and risk of famine.

The Economic and Social Council concluded its 2022 management segment today with a round-table discussion on the theme of “Leveraging ECOSOC for an inclusive and resilient recovery guided by the 2030 Agenda”.

Opening its 2022 management segment today, the Economic and Social Council adopted 6 resolutions and 11 decisions pertaining to proposals by its subsidiary bodies.

Countries struggling with how to allocate their overstretched aid budgets must not pull back on funding for sustainable development, speakers told the Economic and Social Council on the final day of its operational activities segment, warning that fewer dollars for development today means more will be needed to tackle costly — and often tragic — humanitarian crises tomorrow.

Addressing complex, multisectoral challenges that transcend borders requires mapping and effectively utilizing United Nations development expertise across regions to respond to changing demands at the national level, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said today, as the Economic and Social Council continued its annual operational activities for development session.

Facing multiple, cascading global crises, the United Nations development system stands committed to “rescuing the Sustainable Development Goals” as the only viable way forward, Secretary-General António Guterres said today, as the Economic and Social Council opened its annual operational activities for development session.
