Second Committee

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) elected Sven Jürgenson (Estonia) as Chair on 31 May 2017.

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the United Nations General Assembly held its first meeting of the seventy-second session this afternoon to introduce the Bureau and approve the organization of its work.

Concluding its work for the main part of the General Assembly’s seventy-first session today, the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) voted against a proposed amendment to a text by recorded vote, unanimously approving that draft as a whole, for a total of six draft resolutions on topics ranging from debt sustainability and development to food security and beyond.

The General Assembly would stress the importance of overcoming silos in sustainable development by the terms of a draft resolution approved by recorded vote, one of 15 draft resolutions taken up today by the Second Committee (Economic and Financial).

The General Assembly would declare an International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, according to one of five draft resolutions approved by the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today.  It deferred action on three others.

The General Assembly would emphasize the need to optimize economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits of sustainable tourism, especially in African, least developed and small island developing States, according to one of three draft resolutions the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) approved today.

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) approved three draft resolutions today, including “Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development” (document A/C.2/71/L.20/Rev.1).

The General Assembly would demand that Israel stop exploiting, damaging, depleting or endangering natural resources in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, according to one of three draft resolutions approved by the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today.

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today introduced 14 draft resolutions, including a text underscoring the massive contribution of migration and human mobility to sustainable development.

Regional commissions had a long-established role in guiding development policy and analysis in their parts of the world, and each faced its own challenges to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Member States heard as the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held a dialogue on the topic of “One Year of SDGs [Sustainable Development Goals]:  Where the Regions Are”.
