Sven Jürgenson of Estonia Chair of Second Committee
The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) elected Sven Jürgenson (Estonia) as Chair on 31 May 2017. (See Press Release GA/11915.)
Before his appointment as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Mr. Jürgenson was his country’s Ambassador to France and Monaco from 2010, during which time he also served as Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. He was Foreign Policy Adviser to the President from 2006 to 2010, and Under-Secretary for Political Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2006.
From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Jürgenson was Ambassador to the United States, Canada and Mexico, a position he assumed after serving two years as Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He was Director-General of the Foreign Ministry’s Political Department from 1996 to 1998, during which time he also served as non-resident Ambassador to Turkey. Between 1996 and 1998, he was Director of the Division for Security Policy and International Organizations and Deputy Political Director of the Ministry.
Mr. Jürgenson’s foreign service included postings as Minister-Counsellor and Chargé d’affaires, a.i., in Austria. From 1993 to 1995 he was Counsellor and Chargé d’affaires, a.i., to Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia. From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Jürgenson served as Counsellor and Chargé d’affaires, a.i., in Finland and Counsellor at the Office for Estonian Culture in Helsinki.
Mr. Jürgenson holds a master’s degree from Tallinn Polytechnic Institute in data processing and pursued further studies in that field at Ingenieurhochschule Dresden in Germany. He also carried out post-graduate work in 1992 at the Institut International d’Administration Publique in Paris.
Born on 2 April 1962 in Tartu, Estonia, he is married and has three children.
