The new Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations, Merete Fjeld Brattested, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

The International Organization for Migration and its partners are appealing for $84 million towards humanitarian and development aid to more than 1 million migrants and their host communities along the Eastern Route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen, one of the busiest and dangerous migratory routes in the world.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and this year’s theme is “Combating Elder Abuse”.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, one in six people aged 60 and older experience some form of abuse.

Responding to the violent clashes in Beirut today, Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, condemned the use of armed violence outside of State authority and underscored the need for restraint, maintaining calm and stability and ensuring the protection of civilians.

The new Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations, Mona Juul, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

The Secretary-General, en route to Ghana for the memorial service for the late former Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, called Mr. Annan “a man who embodied United Nations values” and was a voice for the voiceless who did not shy away from the most challenging issues, but worked to bridge differences.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Oslo from Helsinki, Finland, on Monday, 18 June, at night.

The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process briefed the Security Council this morning and said that settlement activity has continued in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.  He reiterated that all settlement activity is illegal under international law.
