While South Sudan anticipates holding its first elections in December 2024, key institutions and legal frameworks are yet to be established and critical questions remain unanswered, the top United Nations official for the country told the Security Council today, as speakers warned that intercommunal violence and a massive influx of returnees and refugees continue to worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in the country.

On 8 September 2023, members of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo were briefed by the Coordinator of the Group of Experts on the Democratic Republic of the Congo in connection with the Group’s workplan for its mandate in pursuance of Security Council resolution 2688 (2023).

The Security Council voted today to extend for one year the mandate of the United Nations team tasked with investigating crimes committed by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh), as well as the Special Adviser leading it.
