SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS ERSKINE BOWLES AS DEPUTY

 

SPECIAL ENVOY FOR TSUNAMI RECOVERY

 


United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Erskine Bowles today as the Deputy Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery.  Mr. Bowles will support former President Bill Clinton in his capacity as the United Nations Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery.  The Secretary-General announced President Clinton’s appointment last month.

UN EMERGENCY TEAMS ASSESSING CYCLONE TOLL IN OCEANIA

 


NEW YORK, 16 March (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) -- The UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team has completed assessments in the islands of Mauke and Atiu in the southern group of the Cook Islands and confirmed that these islands are not in a state of emergency.

UN EMERGENCY TEAMS ASSESSING CYCLONE TOLL IN OCEANIA

 


NEW YORK, 10 March (OCHA) -- United Nations emergency teams arrived in Samoa and met with the United Nations Resident Coordinator before heading to the Cook Islands and Tokelau to assess damages inflicted by cyclone Percy.

SAYS 2005 COUNTRY’S ‘MAKE OR BREAK YEAR’

 


KHARTOUM, 8 March (OCHA) -- United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland today completed a four-day tour of the Sudan, including visits to return to areas in South Sudan, internally displaced persons camps and conflict-affected locations in Darfur and meetings with authorities in Khartoum.

UN SENDS EMERGENCY TEAM TO OCEANIA

 


NEW YORK, 2 March (OCHA) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is sending two emergency teams, one to the Cook Islands and one to Tokelau, to help assess the situation after Tropical Cyclone Percy.
