PHILIPPINES FLOODS AFFECT OVER 200,000


NEW YORK, 24 December (OCHA) -- The number of deaths caused by flooding, landslides, and a tornado in eight provinces in the central Philippines has risen to 143 from 90.  In addition, 54 persons have been injured and 112 are still missing.  The total number of people affected by the disaster has now doubled from almost 100,000 to over 200,000 people, and almost 18,000 are sheltering in

21 evacuation centres.

GOVERNMENT OF PHILIPPINES REQUESTS AID AFTER DISASTER

NEW YORK, 22 December (OCHA) -- Following flooding, landslides, and a tornado in the central part of the Philippines, the Government has requested international assistance.  Medicines, food, including canned goods and other food, toiletries, sleeping mats, mosquito nets and blankets are the most needed items.

HUMANITARIAN ENVOY NOTES PROGRESS IN COTE D’IVOIRE


ABIDJAN, 10 December (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) -- “It is important that the parties to the conflict in Côte d’Ivoire now move forward and work together in order for the whole country to return to normality”, said Carolyn McAskie, the Humanitarian Envoy of the Secretary-General for the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire.

SECRETARY-GENERAL’S ENVOY DISCUSSES HUMANITARIAN CONCERNS IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE


NEW YORK, 8 December (OCHA) -- Ms. Carolyn McAskie, the Secretary-General’s Humanitarian Envoy for the Crisis in Côte d’Ivoire, arrived in Abidjan yesterday, 7 December, for a fourth follow-up and evaluation mission.
