NEW YORK, 7 April (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The year 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1540 (2004), which stipulates that all States shall refrain from providing any form of support to non-State actors attempting to acquire or use weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The Government of Kazakhstan will be hosting a workshop on 11-12 March in Astana to take stock of how a decade-old Security Council resolution aimed at curbing weapons of mass destruction impacts global and regional disarmament and non-proliferation.

Mali’s National Commission for the Fight against the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons and the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa are jointly organizing a workshop in Bamako, from 12 to 14 February, for the validation of the 2014-2018 National Action Plan to combat the proliferation and illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons.

In an organizational meeting this morning, the Disarmament Commission elected the Chair for its 2014 substantive session and reviewed the proposals contained in a resolution of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), including that it hold that session from 7 to 25 April.
