Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas, in Video Message, Marks Arms Trade Treaty’s
Entry into Force, Saying ‘We Owe It to Our Children’
NEW YORK, 25 September (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — Saying “it is all too easy for warlords, terrorists, criminal syndicates and all sorts of human right abusers to get sophisticated weapons”, United Nations Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas today delivered a short video message expressing his support for the Arms Trade Treaty.
Ratifications of this landmark treaty crossed the threshold of 50 needed to trigger its entry into force. At a ceremony to mark this milestone, Mr. Douglas’ message underlined that this Treaty “will make it harder for weapons and ammunition to reach the hands of those who misuse them”. He said that, if all Governments apply the new rules set forth by the Arms Trade Treaty, the Treaty will be a force for good.
In his concluding words, Mr. Douglas stressed that “we need to support this Treaty for a safer world. We owe it to our children.”
