United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Ivana Živković of Croatia as Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator and Director, Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The World Food Programme’s first humanitarian shipment of grain from Ukraine, delivered under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, has arrived in Ethiopia and will be distributed in the coming weeks. The shipment will support one month of assistance to over 1.5 million people who have been displaced by drought and conflict.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Arnhild Spence of Norway as the United Nations Development Coordinator in Kosovo. She took up her post on 5 September.
The United Nations is stepping up its response to severe rains and flooding across Pakistan which have reportedly killed over 1,000 people, including hundreds of children. The situation is expected to worsen with more ongoing rainfall.
In Chad, catastrophic flooding in 11 of the country’s 23 provinces has killed 22 people, as of 16 August, and caused extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, agricultural lands and livestock, impacting 340,000 people. The United Nations and aid partners are supporting Government-led efforts to provide lifesaving aid.
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic deployed a rapid reaction force near Ndélé, Bamingui-Bangoran Prefecture, to protect civilians amid reports of possible attacks by armed groups. The Mission continues to reinforce community protection, including in Ouadda-Djallé, Vakaga Prefecture, through early warning training.
