COUNCIL EXTENDS CYPRUS FORCE MANDATE TO 15 DECEMBER 2001

Noting that the Government of Cyprus has agreed that in view of conditions prevailing in the island it is necessary to keep the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) beyond 15 June, the Security Council this morning decided to extend the Mission’s mandate for a further six months until 15 December.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO VISIT KOSOVO AND BELGRADE, 15-18 JUNE

All 15 members of the Security Council will travel to Kosovo and Belgrade from 15 to 18 June to see first-hand the political and security challenges faced by the United Nations in the province, as well as to convey to the people of Kosovo the need to reject violence and take part in elections later this year.

Widespread support was expressed in the Security Council today for the recommendation to create a mechanism to monitor the implementation of sanctions against Afghanistan.

The Security Council this morning renewed the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for another six months until 30 November.
