The following statement was originally issued in Spanish yesterday, 16 October, by the United Nations moderator of the peace negotiations between the Government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG):

Another round of negotiations between the Government of Guatemala and the URNG ended on Saturday, 14 October, in the city of Querétaro Mexico, on the item "Socio-economic aspects and agrarian situation". This round of negotiations was devoted to the sub-item "State management in socio-economic development".

Following is the translation of the toast proposed by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali at the dinner hosted by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide on Saturday, 14 October, in Port-au-Prince:

 

I should like first of all to say what a great pleasure it is for me to be once again among you, at this dinner.

I should, in particular, like to thank you, Mr. President, for the warmth of your welcome and the quality of your hospitality, which my wife and I particularly appreciate.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali arrived in Port-au-Prince on Saturday afternoon, 14 October, for a two-day visit to Haiti. He was greeted at the airport by the Prime Minister, Smarck Michel, and Foreign Minister Claudette Werleigh, as well as his Special Representative in Haiti, Lakhdar Brahimi.

The United Nations values highly the association of nations of shared cultural and linguistic heritage -- the Commonwealth, the Francophone countries, the Lusophone countries, the Ibero-American family of nations gathered here today. Such associations are a critical component of international cooperation.

Biographical Note: Boutros Boutros-Ghali became the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 1992, when he began a five-year term. At the time of his appointment by the General Assembly on 3 December 1991, Mr. Boutros-Ghali had been Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs of Egypt since May 1991 and had served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from October 1977 until 1991.
