SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS LAKHAN MEHROTRA OF INDIA AS HIS REPRESENTATIVE IN CAMBODIA

19970603 Biographical Note The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Lakhan L. Mehrotra (India) as his representative in Cambodia.

Mr. Mehrotra has held various government, diplomatic and academic posts. Currently, he is Overseas Director of the Bharatlya Vidya Bhavan (Institute of Indian Culture) in New Delhi, as well as Visiting Professor at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. Previously, he served as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of External Relations (1990- 1992), Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of India for Africa (1991-1992), and High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka (1989-1990). Earlier, he served as his Government's Ambassador to Yugoslavia (1985- 1989) and to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay (1982-1985); Deputy Chief of Mission in the former Soviet Union (1979-1981); Consul-General in San Francisco (1976-1979); and Charge d'affaires in Beijing.

Mr. Mehrotra was closely associated with the peace process in Cambodia, beginning with the Preparatory Meeting for the International Paris Peace Conference and including the Conference itself. He also participated in the Ministerial Conferences on Rehabilitation and Restoration in Cambodia, held in Tokyo in April and July 1992, and was team leader of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-sponsored Public Administration and Civil Service Reform Mission in Cambodia in July 1993

Mr. Mehrotra was born on 1 November 1934. He is married and has one daughter.
