These are the remarks of Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali today when accepting a gift to the United Nations from the Republic of Estonia:

 

On behalf of the United Nations, I wish to thank the Government and people of the Republic of Estonia for this wonderful example of Estonian decorative folk art.

This work is entitled "Mother Tree". It is the work of the distinguished artist Anu Raud, a poetess of Estonian folk weaving. It beautifully, eloquently, and powerfully expresses the national identify of the Estonian people.

Following is the text of Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali's statement on the occasion of the hoisting of the flag of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia at Headquarters on Saturday, 21 October:

 

Few images command so great a sense of collective strength and solidarity than the flags that line the United Nations. Today we are proud to have that of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to be one among them. It makes eloquent an association that began on 8 April 1993, when this new yet ancient country joined the United Nations.

"I have learned with great regret of your resignation from the position of Secretary General of NATO.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, while attending the Non-Aligned Summit meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, held numerous bilateral meetings. Following the inaugural session on Wednesday, 18 October, at which the Secretary-General delivered his address, the Secretary-General met the President of Algeria, Liamine Zeroual. They discussed the elections in Algeria and the question of Western Sahara. On Western Sahara, the president promised all help in furthering the process of implementation of the settlement plan for Western Sahara.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali arrived in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina on Sunday evening, 15 October. On Monday morning he attended the inaugural ceremony of the Ibero-American Summit meeting, including the hoisting of the Ibero-American flag and the United Nations flag. That was followed by the first working session, where the Secretary-General delivered his address (see Press Release SG/SM/5767/Rev.1).

This is the statement of Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali at a ceremony in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 15 October commemorating the return of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide:

On behalf of the United Nations and the entire international community, I want to tell you how happy we are to celebrate with you the first anniversary of your return to your country.

This anniversary day also has a particularly auspicious significance for all of us.
