The structural elements for implementing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in the United Kingdom were largely in place, but cultural and social obstacles remained, a representative of that country told the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women this morning.

19990610 The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C., in the afternoon of Tuesday, 8 June, to address the Board of Directors of the United States Chamber of Commerce.

In his speech, the Secretary-General emphasized that the United Nations needs the world's businessmen and businesswomen as full partners "in our global mission of peace and development".
