ECOSOC DECIDES ON ITS 2001 PROGRAMME OF WORK,

AND THEME FOR ITS HIGH-LEVEL SEGMENT

Secretary-General Kofi Annan departed Switzerland on Monday afternoon, 29 January, for a two-day visit to Stockholm, Sweden.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan departed Japan on Thursday, 25 January, and travelled to Switzerland, where he would participate in the World Economic Forum meetings in Davos.

SECURITY COUNCIL TO ESTABLISH WORKING GROUP ON PEACEKEEPING ISSUES

The Security Council has decided to establish a Working Group of the Whole on United Nations peacekeeping operations, to address generic peacekeeping issues relevant to its responsibilities and other related matters, according to a statement read out by Council President Kishore Mahbubani (Singapore) this afternoon.

SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS UNOMIG MANDATE UNTIL 31 JULY

The Security Council this afternoon called upon the parties to the conflict in Abkhazia, Georgia, particularly the Abkhaz side, to negotiate the core political questions and all other outstanding issues, as it extended the mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) until 31 July.
