Economic and Social Council Adopts Decisions Designating Theme of Humanitarian Affairs Segment, Date for Event on Transition from Relief to Development

Also Fills Three Vacancies in Subsidiary Bodies, Postpones Action on 11 Others

The Economic and Social Council today designated inclusiveness and coordination as the theme for the upcoming humanitarian affairs segment of its 2015 session, and also decided on the date and format of an event to discuss the transition from relief to development.

By the terms of draft decision (document E/2015/L.6), which the Council adopted by consensus, it decided that the theme of the upcoming humanitarian affairs segment would be “The future of humanitarian affairs: towards greater inclusiveness, coordination, interoperability and effectiveness”.

It further adopted, by consensus, a draft decision (document E/2015/L.7) deciding that the title of the planned event on the transition from relief to development would be “Supporting the transition from relief to development: promoting recovery and resilience”, and that it would take place on 17 June 2015 and consist of one panel discussion with no negotiated outcome.

The Council also filled a number of outstanding vacancies in its subsidiary bodies.

It elected, by acclamation, the United States to fill the outstanding vacancy of the Western European and other States in the Statistical Commission for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2016 and expiring on 31 December 2019.

To the Committee for Programme and Coordination — to which candidates were first nominated by the Council and then elected by the General Assembly — the Council nominated, by acclamation, the United Kingdom to fill an outstanding vacancy of the Western European and other States for a term beginning on the date of election by the Assembly and expiring on 31 December 2017.

The Council decided to further postpone other nominations to the Committee for Programme and Coordination, namely: one member from Western Europe and other States for a term beginning on the date of election by the Assembly and expiring on 31 December 2015; one member from Asia-Pacific States and one member from Western Europe and other States for a term beginning on the date of election by the Assembly and expiring on 31 December 2017; and one member from Western European and other States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2016 and expiring on 31 December 2018.

To the Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the Council elected, also by acclamation, Israel to fill the outstanding vacancy for the Western European and other States for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2016 and expiring on 31 December 2019.

It decided to further postpone several other elections to the Governing Council of UN-HABITAT, namely: two members from Western European and other States for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2016; two members from Western European and other States beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2018; and one member from African States, two members from Asia-Pacific States and one member from Western European and other States for a term beginning on 1 January 2016 and expiring on 31 December 2019.
