The Paris Agreement on climate change moved closer towards entering into force in 2016 as 31 more countries joined the agreement today at a special event hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In a continuing effort to encourage wider participation in the Multilateral Treaty Framework, the United Nations is hosting the annual Treaty Event at its Headquarters from 19 to 23 September. During the event, Member States are invited to sign multilateral treaties deposited with the United Nations Secretary-General or become party to them by depositing instruments of ratification or accession.

On the sidelines of the busy opening of the General Assembly session at United Nations Headquarters, 40 States took 87 treaty actions in an annual event that ended today. “States have again manifested their firm belief in the importance of international treaty law,” said Patricia O’Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel.

During the event, Member States are invited to sign or become party to multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations by depositing instruments of ratification or accession.
