During the course of the general debate at United Nations Headquarters over the past week, 59 Member States took 113 treaty actions at the annual Treaty Event.

On the sidelines of the busy opening of the General Assembly session at United Nations Headquarters, 40 States took 87 treaty actions in an annual event that ended today. “States have again manifested their firm belief in the importance of international treaty law,” said Patricia O’Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel.

In a continuing effort to encourage wider participation in the multilateral treaty framework and strengthen the rule of law, the United Nations is hosting the 2012 Treaty Event at its Headquarters from 24-26 September and from 1-2 October. During the event, Member States are invited to sign or become party to multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations by depositing instruments of ratification or accession.

By making treaties widely accessible to Member States and the public, the United Nations Treaty Series collection played a pivotal role in strengthening the rule of law and promoting transparency in international relations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

The five-day 2009 Treaty Event concluded today with 64 Member States having taken 103 treaty actions.
