Introducing the third and final cluster of topics from the International Law Commission’s annual report, its Chair presented to the Sixth Committee (Legal) today a detailed summary of the diverse and extensive work done on each issue.
Before approving three draft resolutions without a vote today, the Sixth Committee (Legal) heard the President of the International Court of Justice address select aspects of evidentiary practices of the United Nations principal judicial organ, in addition to continuing its deliberations on the International Law Commission’s report.
Commencing deliberations in the Sixth Committee (Legal) on the ‘second cluster’ of topics of the annual report, the Chair of the International Law Commission introduced the four topics, highlighting the conclusion of consideration of the “obligation to extradite or prosecute” (aut dedere aut judicare), and the start of its work on “protection of the atmosphere”.
With a main focus on the draft articles addressing “expulsion of aliens” and the “protection of persons in the event of disasters”, the Sixth Committee (Legal) continued deliberations today on the report of the International Law Commission.
As the Sixth Committee (Legal) commenced its annual consideration of the International Law Commission report, the Commission’s Chair detailed two new sets of draft articles on the “expulsion of aliens” and the “protection of persons in the event of disasters”.
After deliberating on draft articles addressing the effects of armed conflicts on treaties and the responsibility of international organizations, the Sixth Committee (Legal) today approved, without a vote, requests for Observer status for the International Institute for the Developing Eight Countries Organization for Economic Cooperation and the Pacific Community.
As the Sixth Committee (Legal) took up criminal accountability of United Nations officials and experts on mission, speakers agreed that such personnel must not be able to commit crimes with impunity, but held accountable if the Organization were to maintain its credibility.
Faced with new challenges in protecting diplomatic and consular missions and representatives, speakers today called upon Member States to ensure compliance with the Vienna Conventions, as the Sixth Committee (Legal) today considered effective measures to enhance the protection, security and safety of those entities.
Marking the 150th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, speakers in today’s Sixth Committee (Legal) debate urged Member States to ratify the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and relating to the protection of victims of armed conflicts, with the aim of strengthening international humanitarian law.
