SECURITY COUNCIL VISITS KOSOVO


PRISTINA, 17 June -- The Security Council -- on the first-ever mission of all 15 members -- completed a two-day visit to Kosovo with an appeal to both Kosovo Albanian and Kosovo Serb leaders to shun extremism and commit all efforts to building a multi-ethnic society.

SECURITY COUNCIL EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR KOSOVO WOMEN NGOS


Representatives of Kosovo women’s non-governmental organizations and civil society met last night with the President of the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh, along with the Ambassadors of Colombia, Jamaica, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

COUNCIL EXTENDS CYPRUS FORCE MANDATE TO 15 DECEMBER 2001


Noting that the Government of Cyprus has agreed that in view of conditions prevailing in the island it is necessary to keep the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) beyond 15 June, the Security Council this morning decided to extend the Mission’s mandate for a further six months until 15 December.

COUNCIL EXTENDS CONGO MISSION MANDATE -– SUBJECT TO REVIEW –- UNTIL 15 JUNE 2002


Unanimously Adopts Resolution 1355 (2001)


The Security Council this morning extended the mandate of the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) until 15 June 2002.  That extension is, however, subject to a review of progress every four months.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO VISIT KOSOVO AND BELGRADE, 15-18 JUNE


All 15 members of the Security Council will travel to Kosovo and Belgrade from 15 to 18 June to see first-hand the political and security challenges faced by the United Nations in the province, as well as to convey to the people of Kosovo the need to reject violence and take part in elections later this year.
