SECURITY COUNCIL, IN PRESIDENTIAL STATEMENT, WLECOMES NOTIFICATION OF ISRAEL’S INTENT TO WITHDRAW FROM LEBANON

The Security Council this morning welcomed the letters from Secretary- General Kofi Annan that include notification of the decision of the Government of Israel to withdraw its forces in Lebanon in full accordance with Security resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978).

SECURITY COUNCIL VOTES TO TIGHTEN SANCTIONS AGAINST UNITA, UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTING RESOLUTION 1295 (2000)

Acting under the enforcement provisions of the Charter (Chapter VII), the Security Council this afternoon unanimously voted to tighten its sanctions against the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and undertook to consider additional measures -- use of armed force not included -- to make them more effective.

NO REASON FOR OPTIMISM ABOUT EARLY CEASEFIRE IN AFGHANISTAN SECURITY COUNCIL TOLD DURING OPEN BRIEFING

It was not possible to be optimistic about an early ceasefire between the warring factions in Afghanistan, John Renninger, Officer-in-Charge of the Asia and Pacific Division of the Department of Political Affairs, told the Security Council this morning, as it held an open briefing on the situation in that country.

SECURITY COUNCIL, ADOPTING RESOLUTION 1293 (2000) UNANIMOUSLY, DOUBLES AMOUNT IRAQ MAY SPEND FOR OIL SPARE PARTS, EQUIPMENT

The Security Council this morning, resuming its consideration of the humanitarian situation in Iraq, increased the amount of money that Iraq may use to purchase oil spare parts and equipment to $600 million under the programme of humanitarian assistance known as “oil-for-food”.
