NEW YORK, 2 June (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) — At the end of five days of intense discussions and negotiations, the Review Conference for the landmark 1995 United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, on Friday, 27 May, adopted a robust set of recommendations aimed at improving the conservation and management of some of the world’s most commercially important fish stocks, through the improved implementation of the Agreement.

Terrorism — and attempts to address both its root causes and colossal humanitarian impacts — pushed the Security Council towards new ground in 2015, with the 15-member body taking far-reaching actions to redefine threats to international peace and security, while struggling to adapt quickly to the technologies and conditions inflaming situations across the Middle East, Africa and other regions.

Climate change, environmental issues, the migrant and refugee crisis, and the general threat of terrorism were among the concerns voiced by delegates at the General Assembly, speaking as world leaders gathered in New York for the seventieth session of the six-day general debate, which was preceded by a three-day summit on the Sustainable Development Goals as well as a high-level thematic debate on the maintenance of international peace and security.

NEW YORK, 16 September (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) ― The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its thirty-eighth session at United Nations Headquarters from 20 July to 4 September.  Besides the two weeks of plenary meetings (3-7 and 24-28 August), the Commission, working through its subcommissions, devoted five weeks to the technical examination of submissions at the Geographic Information Systems laboratories and other technical facilities of the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.
