The twenty-eighth Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was held at Headquarters from 11 to 12 June, completing its work two days early.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues concluded its seventeenth session today with the adoption of recommendations to protect and advance indigenous peoples’ rights worldwide, stressing that indigenous peoples’ collective rights to lands, territories and resources not only serve their own well-being, but also help address some of the most pressing global challenges, such as climate change and the loss of biological diversity.

The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its forty-sixth session at United Nations Headquarters from 29 January to 16 March.  The first plenary part of the session was held from 5 to 9 February and the second from 5 to 9 March.

The Security Council united in 2017 to enact increasingly stringent sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in response to Pyongyang’s ongoing development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, but failed to come together over the ongoing crisis in Syria, as it addressed a myriad of international peace and security challenges.

Convening for its seventy-second session amid a multilateral system overwhelmed by crises, the General Assembly heard world leaders defend diplomacy and dialogue while expressing a strong will to galvanize support to confront climate threats, resolve languishing conflicts and build a sturdy path towards sustainable development for all.

NEW YORK, 5 December (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) — The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its forty‑fifth session at United Nations Headquarters from 16 October to 1 December.

NEW YORK, 20 June (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) ― The twenty-seventh Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was held at United Nations Headquarters from 12 to 15 June, finishing its work one day early.

The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its forty-third session at United Nations Headquarters from 30 January to 17 March.

In a push to dislodge entrenched positions around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Security Council ended 2016 by adopting the first of its resolutions in more than three decades to target settlements, capping a year of intermittent divisions and contentious debate over how and even whether to intervene in the world’s fiercest conflicts, from Syria and Yemen in the Middle East to the Central African Republic, Mali and South Sudan in Africa.
