WOMEN'S ANTI-DISCRIMINATION COMMITTEE BEGINS SIXTEENTH SESSION

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women opened its sixteenth session this morning by electing Salma Kahn, of Bangladesh, as its new Chairperson and adopting its agenda and organization of work. Ms. Kahn succeeds Ivanka Corti, of Italy.

SECRETARY-GENERAL, SHOCKED TO LEARN OF MASSACRE IN BURUNDI, STRONGLY URGES PARTIES TO NEGOTIATE

The Secretary-General was shocked to learn of another massacre by the Burundi Army, on 10 January, of 122 Burundi refugees returning from the United Republic of Tanzania, in the province of Muyinga.

HUMAN RIGHTS FIELD OPERATION IN RWANDA REPORTS DETENTION OF 5460 RETURNEES

GENEVA, 7 January (UN Information Service) -- Some 5,460 recent Rwandan returnees were being held in detention throughout Rwanda as of 31 December 1996, according to a 6 January report from the Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda (HRFOR) of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
