GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT EXPRESSES SORROW OVER DEATH OF DENG XIAOPING, ILLUSTRIOUS SON OF CHINA

19970219 The following statement was issued today by the President of the General Assembly, Razali Ismail (Malaysia):

I have learned with deep sorrow of the passing away of Deng Xiaoping, the great leader and illustrious son of China. Deng Xiaoping made a monumental contribution to China, which has firmly placed it in the rank of the major countries of the world. The Chinese people have benefited from his wise leadership. The world at large has gained through his efforts to underline global peace and development. I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family, and to the Government and people of China for this loss.
