SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES DECISION BY ARUSHA SUMMIT TO SUSPEND SANCTIONS AGAINST BURUNDI

19990125 Following is the text of a statement made in Geneva on 24 January by Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General of the United Nations welcomes the decision taken yesterday at the Arusha Regional Summit by Burundi's neighbour countries to suspend the economic sanctions imposed on that country in 1996.

Surprised that the Government of Liechtenstein had granted women the right to vote only 15 years ago, expert members of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women this afternoon questioned the strength of women's voice in that country's electoral process.
