SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES DECISION BY ARUSHA SUMMIT TO SUSPEND SANCTIONS AGAINST BURUNDI

19990125 Following is the text of a statement made in Geneva on 24 January by Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General of the United Nations welcomes the decision taken yesterday at the Arusha Regional Summit by Burundi's neighbour countries to suspend the economic sanctions imposed on that country in 1996.

The Secretary-General expresses the hope that this decision will contribute to strengthen the Arusha Peace Process, and encourages all parties to apply the necessary wisdom and spirit of compromise to put an end to the civil war in Burundi and to allow the population to put all its efforts into the reconstruction and the development of the country.
