KINGSTON, 20 March -- The Assembly of the International Seabed Authority opened its sixth session in Kingston this morning, with the election of its President and the adoption of an 11-item agenda for both parts of this years session.

Approves Awards of $964 million for Compensation
GENEVA, 15 March (UN Information Service) -- The Governing Council of the United Nations Compensation Commission concluded its thirty-fifth session today and approved awards of $964 million for compensation.
The Commission for Social Development adopted a set of agreed conclusions on progress and obstacles in implementing the commitments made at the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995) by consensus, as it concluded its thirty-eighth session Friday evening, a month past schedule.
