NAIROBI, 21 March (UNEP) -- Tomorrow, 22 March, marks the fifteenth anniversary of the adoption of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. With the adoption of that Convention, the foundation was laid for concerted international efforts to protect the ozone layer.

GENEVA, 17 March (UN Information Service) -- The United Nations Compensation Commission has today made available, in a fourth round of payments in the second phase, a total of $361,826,215.70 to 60 governments and nine offices of three international organizations for distribution to 74,442 successful claimants.
The "social peace" of East Timor had been threatened by the prevailing economic and social conditions in that country, Hédi Annabi, the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, told the Security Council in an open briefing this morning on the situation in East Timor.
